For father, family and the future.
This artwork is a respectful homage to the great William Morris, the grandfather of interior pattern design and the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1800’s. It is a new diversion for Si Homfray, where the final work sees an ultra modern single line drawing filled with gold. It's a loving tribute to his dad, who hand carved William Morris's quotation ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’ on an oak panel for the family home in Herefordshire many years ago.
The brief was to create the cleanest lines for a strong modern evolution of the classic William Morris print of 1883, one of the best selling hand made prints of all time.
The challenges were discovering a new way of drawing ferns with their complex crossed growth and iconic twists, and finding tethers for various spirals with a single width line as the principle technique. The complete work is underlined by a weave, a nod to the textured fabrics and patterned wallpapers of the William Morris legacy.
