A family inspired story...
The story takes us on a walk through a generic woodland at night. The activity of Barn owls and forest mice families, the incumbent danger and the beautiful protective nature of family. The words ( extract below ) are framed by an entangled woodland pattern of sumptuous colour.
This latest work from Si Homfray features the words of a special night, Inspired by the artist’s need to celebrate his mother and the special feeling of moonlight.
A special night
It is a special night.
We are in the small unnamed woodland
at the end of the road.
There are invisible sounds as the Barn Owl flies overhead.
The woodland floor crackles on dried leaf
as small mice busy themselves to feed families
and all around there is a jeopardy that hangs,
as all prevailing, as tomorrows’ morning mists.
Food is found safely and young mouths are fed.
Sleep beckons an unnatural respite in a world of constant threat.
Now fur is washed, tails are curled and the downy nest wraps sanctuary around the tired faces of the family.
Playful young ones jump and start,
teasing and challenging each other for space and warmth.
Proud parents lie curled together hearts beating in elder rhythm,
ever watchful, ever prepared to corral a breach from the nest.
Owl talks to owl, toowit and toowoo,
the language of two hearts separated by ancient oak.
Not far away, a secret tree hole reveals
another fledgling family of the woods at the end of the road.
This night the full moon shines calm on our families.
There is a gap in the clouds and the great white beams
light the magnificence of every living thing.
Light bends and weaves around everything in the woodland,
accommodating vast differences in scale and illuminating a natural oneness.
Concealed shapes, detail, colour and texture are revealed.
The imperceptible movement of smaller worlds
and ever smaller families are unwrapped as
layer upon layer of generations twist and turn into the light.
We are witness to the timeless infinity.
We are privileged to observe adaption,
the immediacy of change passed down right in front of our eyes.
We are giant aerials to the forest of all emotion,
sensing life on all branches under all logs.
We fear the essence and trepidation of all of life itself…
its every wing flap, its every claw and its every footstep.
In the silvery quiet of the woodland at the end of the road,
there are answers.
Where there is calm on this special moonlit night,
we find rest, warmth, and the peaceful space of family.
Every creature together
beating the greatest eternal rhythm of all…
…the rhythm of love.
